a performance house in beautiful gowanus

Mission

The mission of The Home Of is to provide a gathering ground for the performance, experience and discussion of innovative and fearless theater, music, words, dance, ideas, etc.

The Home Of emerged from the conjoining of a few forces that enthuse this mission: Kirk Wood Bromley, Leah Schrager, and the WNYC Performance Club, run by the NY Times dance critic, Claudia La Rocco.

Bromley, in conjunction with his many collaborators at Inverse Theater Company, has been writing, directing, and producing plays in NYC for 20 years. In 2009, his play, Cycatrix Adaptitude, was set in lofts around NYC. This seeded an idea of a home theater. Bromley met choreographer Leah Schrager at a Performance Club event and their post-show discussions with La Rocco spawned their interest in not only new forms of performance and production, but also in providing a performance space for edgy artists. So they found a house in Gowanus with no neighbors on the other side of the walls, and they created The Home Of.

As the home of Inverse Theater, a company dedicated to presenting new American verse plays, The Home Of tends to prefer works that present the poetic in performance – through music, poetry, theater, dance and graphic arts – but we are open to anything that turns us on. If you are interested in performing at The Home Of, send your stuff to contact@thehomeof.org. The house has a downstairs seating capacity ranging from 25 – 40, depending on configuration. The main playing space is 300 sq ft plus the option to use the kitchen, bathroom and front yard.
